GenCon 2017 Mega Rundown – Odds n Ends

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe reporting is winding down, but not without sharing photos of things that amused me as I wandered the convention center, like the sleeping giant to the left who was a loaner from the popular live-action True Dungeon experience (think LARPing in a specially built dungeon.)

True Dungeon was located in the basement of Lucas Oil Stadium.  The convention expanded into the football stadium this year, with a few events (like yesterday’s starship simulators, anime movies, etc…) in the hallways and the entire football floor covered with stalls and game tables.

A panoramic shot of the stadium floor in the early morning.   Back right is the boardgame library area.  The blue area in the front right is Mayfair games’ library and the far left orange tables are for Wizkid use.  The center has a tribute to GenCons past and a variety of old-school gaming options.

An homage to the Horticultural Hall. The location of the very first GenCon.

To commemorate the 50 years of GenCon, there was a special exhibit in the middle of the floor containing memorabilia of the convention over the years.  It was even grouped into eras – Wargaming, RPGs, Magic: the Gathering, etc…

More GenCon programs of years past…

A group about to play the very first edition of Dungeon, the boardgame (purple box.)  I have an ancient copy at home but it isn’t quite that old..

Kids playing with swords, start ’em early.  The guy in back with the kilt ran the thing and was hilarious.

More arts and crafts for the kiddies.  In another area you could build your own foam weapon or make things out of leather (mostly shields it looked like….)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A lazertag area was set up in the middle. It wasn’t too large but was set up with lots of little walls and chokepoints made out of PVC pipe and cloth.

A giant cat game in the Mayfair area.

Sure, you could play games in the Mayfair area, or you could simply wallow in a pile of carrots and trains.  Clearly, these children have chosen the correct path.

Of course, there was also room for gaming  adjacent to the main exhibitor hall.  Lots of tables for scheduled games, but there was almost always room somewhere for people to sit down and play something they just bought.

A giant pirate ship game…  Yar!

Another magnet below the board soccer game…

This roughly 5’x6′ Game Anywhere table actually folds up into a (3’x2.5’x8″) carrying case.  It’s a  pretty heavy case, but it is a carrying case.   Magnetic to boot.  Think they’re kickstarting thier large table (shown above) at the moment.

If you can’t spring for a fancy table, you can spring for some pretty eye candy for your games.  The Game Trayz guys can hook you up with a plastic insert of some considerable panache.

If you can’t afford a table or even trays for your games, you can spring for one Game Trayz custom can holders…

People watching – Oh the people you will meet!

I didn’t know what to think of this guy walking ahead of me with a cute little canvas wagon until I got up close.  He’s a walking board game store!

The storm trooper is cool, but Princess Leia is what really sells it.

Winner of the tallest butterfly at the show!

On my way into the show there was an old-time arcade in the hallway, filled with classics.  I walked by this crane machine and then had to do a double-take.  You’re not gonna see this assortment of games and memorabilia  in your typical Chuck e Cheese.

I went by the Mattel booth but most certainly did not see this out on display. I had to learn about it in a display case in the main hallway. Ah, such a missed chance. They should have had one of those Mayfair style ginormous versions on the show floor!

One last parting shot, on the backside of the car parked next to me…

And that’s it for this year!  Time to break out the games and play!!!

Looks like you had fun! The sockem robots game brought back some memories. The convention setup looks cool and different from what I’ve attended or seen. People watching is the best!!! Thanks for sharing.
