Holiday Gift Ideas, Part 4 – make a Roll and Write travel kit!
Well, about a month ago, we (as a group) had a great idea to get a bunch of things written down and provide our readers with a nice gift giving list. Welp, let’s just say that we didn’t get our you-know-what together… So, instead of a big list, I have decided to just make some shorter posts with things that catch my eye (or things that I notice to be on sale). As I make these impromptu posts, I will try to stick to things which can be delivered prior to Dec. 25 — this likely means that they are things in stock on Amazon Prime. (All the Amazon links here are affiliate links, and the Opinionated Gamers may earn a commission if you buy from those links)
You know, some days you just want to bring along a bunch of games and be prepared for whatever comes your way. I have a couple of different travel kits, but my first one (and probably still most beloved) is my roll and write compendium. I now have over 20 different games that are all packed together in two small cases.
So what do you need? Well, first, you have to already have a supply of roll-and-write games. If you’re like me, you’ll discover that you have loads of these! Take a few sheets from the box, and then run them through your sheet laminator…
https://amzn.to/3pAdDYK
This is a great choice. It can laminate up to an A4 sheet, and it also has a built in paper trimmer on the top! So laminate the sheets and then cut them down to size .
now, since you’re using laminated sheets, you’ll need some dry erase markers to write on them with.
This set has worked out really nicely for me – https://amzn.to/3EuKSTe
It has a number of black and blue ones when you don’t need anything special, but then it also has enough colors here in case your game requires them or you just want to have player colors easily visible…
So what else do you need. Well, it depends if you want to keep your original games intact. If you do, you’ll likely need some dice (and if you plan your games nicely, you may be able to use the same set of dice for a number of games).
I’d recommend a bunch of colored d6 – https://amzn.to/3xUfzPk
perhaps a set of polyhedral dice too… https://amzn.to/3dof076
And of course, for those games with custom dice, some blank dice that you can label as needed… https://amzn.to/3drvcEk
Finally, you need a small case to carry everything around in.
Here’s what I use – one of these photo cases out of this set. https://amzn.to/31DsPMo Sure, you probably don’t need a whole set; but if you fill out each of these cases, you can carry around a bunch of games. As the laminated sheets are pretty slim, I fit about ten roll and writes and their dice in each photo case.
In the past, I also used something like this – https://amzn.to/3dplUsy
This multi-level case held all the sheets and pens in one section, I had the dice segregated for each game using the removal divided section, and then the bottom held an assortment of small card games (and OINK games) to provide even more variety.
Anyways, hopefully this list can help you provide someone with a nice travel kit!
Until your next appointment,
The Gaming Doctor
