Patrick Brennan: Game Snapshots – 2023 (Part 7)

I’d love to say something here that’s smart, witty, thought-provoking and insightful, but all I’ve got is that I applaud people who throw over-the-top money at under-developed Kickstarter games. The percentage of quality games may be dropping but, the bigger the industry, the more participants we attract, then the higher the number of quality games we see. The fun is in that everyone’s definition of quality is different. Then it’s just a matter of listening out for yours. Here’s one …

Dale Yu: First Impressions of Barcelona

Barcelona

  • Designer: Dani Garcia
  • Publisher: Board&Dice
  • Players: 1-4
  • Age: 14+
  • Time: 60-90 minutes
  • Played with review copy provided by publisher

Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in Europe to visit; I have been there on a number of occasions, and I am already planning to be there again next February.  Part of what I love is the architectural beauty of the Eixample – the expansion of the old city, masterminded by Ildefons Cerda.  The filled city blocks and street grid with diagonals is easily recognizable.

My top 166 games of all time…

Every two years, I’ve created a list of my favorite games – once the games I rated an 8 or higher, now the games I enjoy enough to have in my collection.  This is the tenth such list I’ve created.  My collection has continued to shrink – the impetus for including everything in my collection starting in 2021 – and as a result this is actually the shortest list I’ve made, with only 166 games included.  Based upon a cutoff date of August 5, 2023, these 166 games represent about 4.4% of the 3785 different games I’ve rated – though they account for 50.7% of my 25184 game plays since I started recording my plays in 1996.  With each entry, I’ve included the number of times I’ve played the game as of the cutoff date; this can be taken as a proxy for my confidence in my rating – and thereby the game’s inclusion on this list.  I’m pleased to note that the fewest times I’ve played any of the games listed here is 13, an all-time high for my Euphrat & Tigris scoring of my collection.

Dale Yu: Review of The White Castle

The White Castle

  • Designers: Shei S & Isra C
  • Publisher: DEVIR
  • Players: 1-4
  • Age: 12+
  • Time: 80 minutes
  • Played with review copy provided by publisher

From the publisher:

The heron flies over the Himeji sky while the Daimyo, from the top of the castle, watches his servants move. Gardeners tend the pond, where the koi carp live, warriors stand guard on the walls, and courtiers crowd the gates, pining for an audience that brings them closer to the innermost circles of the court. When night falls, the lanterns are lit and the workers return to their clan.

In The White Castle, players will control one of these clans in order to score more victory points than the rest. To do so, they must amass influence in the court, manage resources boldly, and place their workers in the right place at the right time. [In this game, you will] explore the most imposing fortress in modern Japan, Himeji Castle, where the banner of the Sakai clan flies under the orders of Daimio Sakai Tadakiyo.

The White Castle is a Euro type game with mechanics of resource management, worker placement and dice placement to carry out actions. During the game, over three rounds, players will send members of their clan to tend the gardens, defend the castle or progress up the social ladder of the nobility. At the end of the match, these will award players victory points in a variety of ways.
