evergreen

When I was reading up on Evergreen as part of my research; I thought to myself that it sounded familiar.  When I got to GenCon and had a chance to talk to the designer, Hjalmar Hach, I realized that this game is very much the successor to one of his previous titles, Photosynthesis.  Though the board looks a bit different – here a recessed board where you plug in wooden tree-ples (as opposed to a flat board where you stand up cardboard standee trees); much of the theme and concepts are shared between the games.  In Evergreen, your goal is to build a lush ecosystem by planting seeds, growing trees, and placing other natural elements on your planet, trying to make it the greenest and most fertile of all.

Battle of (Virtual) Legends: Unmatched Goes Digital

My love for the Unmatched series of games from Restoration Games is already well-known… at least if you’ve been reading my reviews here on the OG over the years. I wrote an extensive review of the system back in 2020… and then followed it up in 2021 with a review of the next couple of boxes released.

I’ve been a bit more cautious about reviewing the newest boxes (Battle of Legends Volume II and the Marvel sets) as my sons and I were playtesters for those sets… but I’ll get to that at some point. (Short version: Volume II is really great; the Marvel sets are cool but I prefer the plethora of heroes from across mythology and history. That said, I’m waiting for Squirrel Girl to show up – she was a blast to playtest.)

But that’s not we’re here to talk about, is it? Instead, the digital implementation of the Unmatched combat system went live yesterday on Steam (in Early Access mode). And I’m going to spend a bit of time giving you my impressions of it as a rabid Unmatched fan!

Dale Yu: Review of That Old Wallpaper

That Old Wallpaper

  • Designers: Nathan Thornton and Danielle Deley
  • Publisher: AEG
  • Players: 2-5
  • Age: 10+
  • Time: 15-30 minutes
  • Played with review copy provided by AEG at GenCon 2022

that old wallpaper

The elevator pitch from the publisher:  “Remember that old wallpaper we used to have? In that one room? With the funky colors and those weird sunburst patterns of whatever?”  OK, good, because that’s what we’re doing… drafting stacks of wallpaper cards and piecing them together to most closely re-create the patterns from your memories.

I received a copy of That Old Wallpaper from AEG at GenCon, and it took a few weeks to get to the table here… (not because I didn’t want to play it, but because we just can’t play 25 games in a single week!).  There are 130 wallpaper cards in the game, most of which have full printed designs on them, but 20 or so which are identical “hazy memory” cards that only have a quarter of the card printed with a single wild pattern on it.  Each player also gets a set of player cards, numbered 1 to 10 – these are shuffled, and each player deals a starting hand of 5 cards.  Tiebreaker markers are randomly placed in a line on the table as well.

Dale Yu: Review of Next Station: London

Next Station: London

next station london

Roll and Write games were once all the rage; every time that you looked around, there was a new one to try.  After a while, I’ll admit that they all felt a bit same-y, and my enthusiasm for the genre diminished a bit.  That being said, I continue to be impressed with the RAW designs from Matthew Dunstan – and we’ve reviewed a number of his recent designs here on the blog: Aquamarine and Voyages – as well as a board game which feels like a RAW, The Guild of Merchant Explorers.   Given this recent pedigree, I was actually pretty jazzed to get a chance to try this one out.

In Next Station: London, the city of London has commissioned you to redesign its underground network! Optimise connections, serve as many sights as possible and exploit the tunnels that pass under the Thames. Be careful to respect the specifications set by the city as you try to be the best metro planner.

Dale Yu: Review of Rear Window

Rear Window

  • Designer: Prospero Hall

rear window

Rear Window is a classic Hitchcock film – and if you’ve never seen it, pause here, go and stream it and come back.  If you don’t have time for that – here is the synopsis borrowed from the Wikipedia page on the movie:

Recuperating from a broken leg, professional photographer L. B. “Jeff” Jefferies is confined to a wheelchair in his apartment in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. His rear window looks out onto a courtyard and other apartments. During an intense heat wave, he watches his neighbors, who keep their windows open to stay cool. They are a lonely woman whom Jeff nicknames ‘Miss Lonelyhearts’, a newlywed couple, a pianist, a pretty dancer nicknamed ‘Miss Torso’, a middle-aged couple whose small dog likes digging in the flower garden, and Lars Thorwald, a traveling costume jewelry salesman with a bedridden wife.  Jeff is visited regularly by his socialite girlfriend, Lisa Fremont, and a nurse named Stella. One night after an argument with Lisa, Jeff is alone in his apartment and hears a woman scream, “Don’t!” and the sound of breaking glass. Later that night, during a thunderstorm, he observes Thorwald making repeated late-night trips carrying a suitcase. The next morning, Jeff notices that Thorwald’s wife is gone, and sees him cleaning a large knife and handsaw. Thorwald also has moving men haul away a large trunk. Jeff becomes convinced that Thorwald has murdered his wife, and shares this with Lisa and Stella, who believe him when they observe Thorwald acting suspiciously. Jeff calls his friend Tom Doyle, a New York City Police detective, and asks him to investigate Thorwald. Doyle finds nothing suspicious—apparently, Mrs. Thorwald is upstate.

Akropolis

  • Designer: Jules Messaud
  • Publisher: Gigamic
  • Players: 2/4  (that’s what the box says.  BGG clarifies this as 2-4)
  • Age: 8+
  • Time: 20-30 minutes
  • Played with review copy provided by Hachette USA

akropolis

Akropolis is a game from a designer who is completely unknown to me, Jules Messaud.  BGG has 2 games credited to him, both 2022 releases, and I have not played the other.  From the short description on the ‘Geek:

The most talented architects in ancient Greece stand ready to achieve this goal. Build housing, temples, markets, gardens and barracks, so you can grow your city and ensure it triumphs over the others. Raise its prestige with harmonious planning that conforms to specific rules, and enhance it by building plazas.

Stone is an essential resource, so make sure you do not neglect it. You’ll need enough quarries so you can build higher up, making your city stretch towards the sky.

  1. Choose a tile from the construction site
  2. Arrange it in your city to unlock each district’s full potential
  3. Build on higher levels, increase the value of your districts and win the game
