Clever Cubed is the third installment in the Ganz schön clever universe.  In many ways, it feels the same, as the active player rolls 6 dice, isolates some, and then everyone makes marks on their scoring sheet – but there are different mini-games in play to still make this feel different from its two predecessors.

Capstone Games is a label that I generally associate with longer complex games – but they have started a new Family line of games to target this more mainstream group.  One of the releases from 2021 is Juicy Fruits, a game designed by half of the team that won the 2020 Spiel des Jahres for Pictures.

The Adventure Games system was launched in 2019 – a different riff on the “Escape room” genre which continues to grow in size and variety. In this series of games, players work together to get through a story. Unlike many of the other games (including the EXIT series also by Kosmos), there is no time constraint in the Adventure Games line. Instead, players are encouraged to explore their surroundings and watch/listen to the story unfold. 

(THERE ARE SOME SUPER-MILD SPOILERS IN THE IMAGES. We were recently contacted by a company, Mobile Escapes, from Canada – they are a company which did in-person escape rooms in the before times, but like many other companies, they have pivoted to online adventures which allow people to have fun at home and remain socially distant.  I’d like to take a chance to write about the experience, in a spoiler-free fashion.

International Gamers Awards 2021 Nominations Announced

The International Gamers Awards, which has been selecting their Games of the Year for over 20 years, has announced their nominations for their 2021 awards.  For this year only, an expanded period of eligibility was used, due to the effects of COVID-19; games released between January 2020 and June 2021 were eligible.  The number of categories was also expanded from previous years.  There are now three:  Best Multiplayer Experience; Best 2-Player Experience; and Best Solo Experience.  Because of the way the categories are structured, it’s possible for the same game to be nominated for more than one category.

Patrick Brennan: Game Snapshots – 2021 (Part 13)

My new favourite Olympic sport is sport climbing!

I’m what you might call a climbing fan from afar. There have been occasional visits to indoor climbing centres over the years but that’s about it; too much pain and effort required to get good at it. I’ve seen sport climbing competitions before so it wasn’t entirely new. But what I liked about it (and why I felt it relevant here) is that this sport felt more like a game than any other. I enjoyed watching the climbers try to puzzle out how to get past a particular boulder problem (and building / saving reserves to be able to execute), and watching how they navigated tricky sections of the lead climb. And I loved the drama and gasps of someone falling from the lead climb just short, and the tension-breaking cheers of a contender making a new high and kicking on!
