t’s great being quarantined with a spouse who is a gamer; I mean, it’s not great being quarantined, of course, but I appreciate that I have the opportunity to get some physical games to an actual table. So many games turn out to work well for two players. However, one genre that is nearly impossible to do with 2 is trick-taking; with the exception of Fox in the Forest,  I haven’t been much of a fan of the 2 player trick-taking games I’ve tried over the years. Hope springs eternal, though, and when I came across this Kickstarter a few months ago I decided to give it a shot, and I was happy to see it arrive on my doorstep. We broke it out almost immediately.

Herrloff is set in the time of Vikings, and you and your opponent are fighting for the right to be king. Your goal is to be the first player to 50 points.

Deckscape: The Curse of the Sphinx (Spoiler Free)

Designer: Martino Chiacchiera, Silvano Sorrentino
Artist: Alberto Bontempi
Publisher: dV Giochi
Players: 1-6
Ages: 12+
Times Played: 1, on a copy I borrowed from Dale

The Deckscape line from dV Giochi are a series of “puzzle” games and reside in the orbit of “escape room” games.  These sorts of things come in many varieties -some require apps and others physically can’t be played again because there are destructive or consumable elements- but what I have liked about the Deckscape series is the relative straightforwardness of the puzzles, a little dabbling in riddles, and the sense of adventure.  They insert you into a narrative and the illustrations of the cards carry you along.

Let’s look at how the Deckscape series plays.

King of Tokyo: Dark Edition (Game Review by Chris Wray)

  • Designer: Richard Garfield
  • Art: Paul Mafayon
  • Publisher: Iello
  • Players: 2 – 6
  • Ages: 8 and Up
  • Time: 30 Minutes
  • Times Played: > 10 (On Review Copy from Publisher)

King of Tokyo is a modern classic.  The game is often held up as a “gateway” game, and we here at the Opinionated Gamers put it on our list of 10 recommended intro games.

Publisher Iello released a special “Dark Edition” earlier this year.  Hailed a collector’s edition, the game features new, darker artwork, upgraded components, and even a new gameplay mechanism, the wickedness gauge.

I’m a King of Tokyo fan, so I was excited to try out the new edition.  And though I’m skeptical about the new mechanism, It has rekindled my love of the game and been a big hit with my family.

Dale Yu: Review of Deckscape: Escape from Alcatraz (spoiler free)

Deckscape: Escape from Alcatraz

  • Designers: Martino Chiacchiera and Silvano Sorrentino
  • Players: 1-6
  • Ages: 12+
  • Time: ~60 minutes
  • Times played: 1, with review copy provided by dv Giochi

The puzzle game genre has been rapidly growing over the last few years – there have been many entries in this field over that time period.  Likewise, we’ve done our best here to seek out as many of them as we can to try.  Many of the initial forays into the puzzle area have been big-box affairs, some with electronic solving devices – allowing for multiple expansions that use the same hardware.  The catch with most of these games are that they can really only be played once – because once you know the solution to the puzzle, you can’t really experience the solving of the same puzzle again…  The Deckscape series goes a different route, instead focusing on the portability aspect.

We have looked at a number of these in the past Continue reading

10 Great Tile Placement Games (Article by Chris Wray)

Tile placement games are a prominent part of the hobby, even if the mechanic is a bit difficult to define.  Perhaps because of that vaguess, it isn’t really a mechanic that, at least in my experience, inspires a lot of love or collectors.  But nonetheless many incredibly popular games — everything from Alhambra to Zooloretto — have tile placement mechanics.

Today’s article is part of our “10 Great” series that features 10 great games in a given subcategory.  I pick a mechanic, theme, publisher, etc.  In this case, I picked a mechanic.  We here at the Opinionated Gamers then all vote behind the scenes to create a list of 10 great games that meet the criteria.  We’re aiming for an article a month, and I’d love your suggestions about future lists.

Northgard (First Impressions)

I’m not sure if I’m showing my age and/or my relative immaturity here… but any time I play a game about Vikings, this is what pops into my head.

So, let’s just start with a simple statement of truth. The Muppets, led by Jim Henson, are one of the cultural touchstones of the 20th Century.

Oh, yeah… I’m supposed to be giving you, dear reader, my first impressions of Northgard, the new board game based on the popular video game. (Actually, I have no idea if it’s popular or not – I don’t play that many video games any more. I do know that I can order it in a variety of different formats… and since I have teenage sons, at my house I could play it on Steam, the Nintendo Switch, or our Xbox One.)

Once again, I have managed to chase a rabbit (this one made of pixels) and get away from the point of this article: a preview of the Northgard: Uncharted Lands board game which is currently on Kickstarter. Seeing as how I am unsure of your level of patience, I’ll proceed with that forthwith.

First, thanks to the good folks at Open Sesame Games, who know how to do prototypes right. The quality of the components were top-notch and made for a good solid first impressions experience. In addition, they provided me with the means to create a proxy version of the Creatures expansion – more on that later.

Second… well, there is no second. It’s just time for me to play the music and light the lights!
