BGGCON Day Three (2018)

Today we’ll start with a shoutout to the folks that showed up early and waited for the Not Hot Games Room to open.

Jim and his crew are enthusiastic supporters of my nonsense, and it means a lot to me. We’ll come back more to this evening’s activities later.

One of the side effects of this scale of gaming is inevitable lost pieces.  I enjoy the puzzle of trying to identify game pieces in the library, and last year, on my first shift in the library, there were several pieces inherited from the previous con which had gone unidentified.  I found a number of them, but was stumped by many more.  Then this fellow walked in:

He’s a component ID savant.  I bring it up now, and not last year, because he walked up to me today to say that he had identified which game that plain red D6 came from.

BGGCON Day Two (2018)

This was a busy day.

I started off this morning teaching a few titles in the hot games area, as I will also be doing Friday and Saturday.  I usually request an 8 AM shift there, and this morning was one of the largest crowds I’ve seen waiting for the air walls to be opened.  Once inside, each table was consistently filled, outside of Fuji, KeyFlow, and Root.

This morning was also the first replacement, with one of the copies of Architects of the Western Kingdom being replaced by Captains of the Gulf.

I’ve mentioned before that I love the food generosity of strangers at bggcon, so your first OpinionatedEaters break today is this coconut donut from Revolution Donuts. A table of folks had a box with an open lid beckoning to passerbys.

BGGCON Day One (2018)

The fellow in the green shirt and hat there would turn out to be my friend Rikki, but I didn’t know I’d put it that way when the day started.

As usual, I like to walk up and down the registration line to see what interesting games and activities folks are getting into.  Rikki had brought a chromebook and a large monitor, and the folks below were playing a horse race gambling game on their phones – think JackBox style where they are each logged into a website that they are interacting with while the screen narrates the activities and the results and what not.

The players were quite engaged, and clearing having a great time.  It turns out Rikki makes large group games professionally, and tomorrow I’ve signed up for a 20-30 person game he’s running, of which I know no details, so more on that tomorrow.

But before we get to tomorrow, we need to get the con open, play a few games, and probably eat something.

BGGCON Day Zero (2018)

To be honest, while I went into RollingCon with the intent to play only train games, I reached an inflection point Tuesday morning, where I was ready to play some light, whimsical, new Essen titles, but would pass on train titles so that I could rest – or look at the window to see excavators balanced on hopper cars.

Texas, what is going on?

Luckily, there was some of that on the train as well. One table played Smartphone, Inc., while we played a title not yet listed on BGG from the Spring 2018 Game Market: Evidence, Case#02.

RollingCon or The Time We Took a Train to BGGCON

I’m currently on a train getting ready to pass from Illinois into Missouri. It’s 7:00, dark out, and I think there’s snow on the ground. (That’s now now, when I’m writing it, not when you’re reading it, when I finish it, or when I proofread it.) It’s the second dinner break on either the first or second day of the first or the only, “RollingCon”.

This is how we got here. Continue reading

Patrick Brennan: Game Snapshots –2018 (Part 18)

Have I mentioned recently how much love Gloomhaven generates around here. It’s still going strong.

This is the bouncer at Patrick’s game nights.

Replay on Pulsar 2849 has confirmed my liking, and my Thursday night crew have declared it the best Euro-y game I’ve introduced this year! Well ok, they haven’t seen everything I’ve played, but yep, good game, glad I’ve got it. Continue reading
