OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWelcome back to the 2016 Mega Rundown.  Today we start into the gamer games in earnest, hitting them up alphabetically by publisher.  Sit back and let the photos wash over you to see what games caught my fancy.

GenCon 2016 Mega Rundown – Kids Games

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI was able to attend GenCon for a couple days this year.  As a gamer with children (and a writer for GamerDad.com) I have a special place in my heart for games I can play with my kids.  The following are some of the kid-friendly titles that grabbed my attention as I cruised the dealer hall. They are not all going to hold the attention of an adult, but a surprising number work well as a quick-playing game for grown-ups.

GenCon 2016 Mega Rundown – RPGs & Digital

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGenCon 2016 has come and gone.  Thankfully I was able to attend, if only for a couple days.  Do not worry, however, as I have once again undertaken to cruise the dealer hall, looking for photos to share with you in my annual Mega Rundown!  I took piles of (electronic bits of?) photos and wrote down notes on almost 100 different games.  If you have the stomach, follow along this week as I go down the lists.  Today, we’ll start off with a look at role playing games and some of the digital offerings I found at the convention (because they’re the shortest of the lists.)

Gen Con Day Four: Concluding Thoughts

Gen Con Day Four: Concluding Thoughts

With Gen Con 2016 now behind us, I wanted to offer my concluding thoughts on the convention, put together my anecdotal list of the top 20 hottest games, and offer thoughts on a few more games I played.

From my vantage point, there wasn’t a standout game of the convention.  If pressed to pick, I’d go with Codenames: Pictures, Cry Havok, or Seafall.  Codenames: Pictures was piled high and selling well, and it has deservedly topped the Geekbuzz list.  Seafall was arguably the most anticipated game of the convention, and certainly one of the most talked about games on the floor, but the publisher just didn’t have enough copies on hand for it to keep up the pre-convention anticipation.  I didn’t talk to very many people who had actually played it, which might explain why it has fallen to #6 on the Geekbuzz list.  Nonetheless, Seafall will probably go down as one of the more notable games of the year once it starts shipping.  Cry Havok was also widely talked about, and I heard great things from a few groups that played it, but it also sold out before the doors opened. Gen Con Day Three: What’s Hot, and What I Played

Saturday seemed to be the most crowded day yet, which is normal, but I was still able to get in plays of some solid games.  Below are updates on what’s hot, what’s sold out, and a couple of fun pictures from around the convention.  I also provide initial impressions on three games I played today.   Continue reading

Gen Con Day Two: What’s Hot, and What I Played

I just got back to the hotel after the second day of Gen Con 2016.  Below are updates on what’s hot, what’s sold out, and other news.  I also provide initial impressions on two games I played today.

I’m still not seeing any game as the big standout of the convention.  My hotness list from yesterday still seems accurate, although I’ll add a couple of games that I’ve been hearing a lot about: Junk Art and Lotus, both of which I played (and discuss below).   Continue reading
