Will I make it to Essen?

Here is just some scenes from my phone about the last two days…

Here’s a phrase that I had not needed to translate prior to this trip…

Also getting very used to seeing these little yellow boxes. This train (when I took the picture) was supposed to be twenty minutes late. It actually arrived 38 minutes late but I didn’t think to take an updated picture.

Along with my news is a 59 minute delay?

It gets worse…

No big deal, then…

So I change my plans, let’s just go to Essen. By the time I figure out how to get to Bonn, the sun will set and no time for seeing old buildings. I am starting to think planning to be there twenty hours ahead of plan might be cutting it too close!

First try

Second try

What does that even mean? Are there protestors that have glued themselves onto the track? Is there an epidemic of people without tickets and they are shutting down the train / line?

As I’m writing this, the next S6 chugs in. No Bueno

The platform is crowded as both the s1 and s6 have been canceled. The next s1 came (fifteen minutes late) as I took this picture

After one canceled route and two empty trains, one came that let us on

Of course it remains to be seen if it actually runs.

Though Dusseldorf isn’t the origin of the S6 line, the entire train was empty when it rolled in, and the platform here was so crowded, it was still SRO in my car.

And ominously I have been on this replacement train for 7 minutes and it hasn’t moved. A quick check of the DB app shows

My advice to anyone coming now is to spend a bit more coin and just take a taxi. As far as I know, the 52 Autobahn is wide open

Until my next train delay

PS. Finally made it!

Maybe spend an obscene amount of money for a taxi. This could be a situation in which it’s worth it for the peace. OMG.

I think that translates to “a fuckton of money”, yes?

    • From my experience, “unauthorized people on line” are most often children playing where they shouldn’t, and after DB staff has escorted them away, a thorough search is necessary to make sure there was not one more who just hid somewhere.

I thought I ha heard about issues getting the train from Dusseldorf airport this year. The suggestion was to get a bus directly from the airport to Essen Hbf. Of course, I can’t find the reference now!

Just made the trip from Düsseldorf Airport to Essen Hbf tonight. I must have been your Karma balance: S1 pulled up five minutes after we got to the platform, went two stops, literally walked across the platform to get on an S6 that was running late and was in Essen in about 40 mins start to finish.

Hope to see you at the show…
