Note: This is my first time attending Essen, so in my entries this week I’m discussing the convention from the perspective of a first time attendee. I’m also providing snap reviews of games, and today I cover Raptor, Porta Nigra, and T.I.M.E Stories (no spoilers).
Essen 2015 is in the books. I woke up early, packed, weighed my luggage, and determined I had room for a couple more games. I walked over the main train station for some breakfast. Much to my delight, the SdJ and DSP winners were being featured as part of a games tour.
Another year has passed and we are going home. Caterina point me out that this was here 5th or 6th Essen’s edition … something not all seasoned gamers can be proud of. Of course I miss my travels into Haba or Schmidt booth but I can now play Russian Raylroads or Mombasa as much as I want. We have played again the game “try to reach Koln Airport” and this time we drove the “Broken Singlas” event. That cost us a trip to Wuppertal, time and some resources but it was much more better and cheaper than another Taxi’s trip. Si, I think, we won unless someone play against us the “Germanwing’s strike” or something worse.

I don’t know what will happen next year because also Francesco is pawing the ground to be here. Who knows … before going to the rankings (we will post it in a separate session tomorrow) some important notes:

After that we gone to our appointment at Giochi Uniti’s booth to try Rhein River Trade, a game from Zhanguo’s designers, announced years ago and close to be released. If you remember I told you to avoid sessions with the designers but I discovered there is something really worse: have a session with the designer commenting the game with one of the most verbose and chatty Italian’s blogger. Me and Caterina were stunned! I don’t know if it was the pleasure to have a all Italian speaking table or just the desire to make us really understand how the game is but it took endless time just to take few turns. Nicoletta and his housband were great in explaining us all the details and it was for me a surprise to discover how long has been the development time of this game. Talking with designers about design is something I love (you can read my series of interview here) but Caterina’s is just 14 and she need to move and play! The game looks interesting and I hope to see it soon published. You have to fulfill contracts bringing your goods along the Rhein using your trucks or common transports including airplanes, boats and trains. Public transports are quicker but you have to pay: for each kind of transport you have 3 different companies (colors) from the more expensive (but really quick) to the cheaper and slower one. The idea is to organize your cargo movement and costs at best, according to the contracts you took, since, in the end, money are victory points. It looks fine (I think it needs just some small fixing in the graphics and materials but the rules are OK) and it seems to offer different strategies.
Part 1
It is a sort of tradition of our Essen blog start one of the reports with Caterina sleeping. Who am I to ruin a so nice habit and so, here we are!
Me and Caterina are versatile players able to compete both with demanding Euros or entangling Americans so, after the hearth rending meeting with the Spiele des Jahres itslef today we bumped into a real Goblin! We were used to think goblins were little and grouchy creatures: this one looks much more like one of the Winnie the Pooh’s friends but we don’t presume to be always in the truth and we know that everything happening in Essen Messe is true and so … here Caterina and the Goblin (continue reading to see …)

Note: This is my first time attending Essen, so in my entries this week I’m discussing the convention from the perspective of a first time attendee. I’m also providing snap reviews of games, but I’m going to include today’s games on tomorrow’s run down, because I only got partial plays in today. Today’s entry focuses on the happenings in the convention center as well as the current hotness.
I started my morning bright and early at 5:00am with a trip to Cologne. The train ride was a little over an hour, which gave me a couple of hours in Cologne before I had to head back to Essen for the convention’s opening.
I had been told that today would be the busiest day of the convention, and that ended up being true. They opened the doors 15 minutes early this morning, and within an hour I felt that the halls were more crowded than I had seem them on the first couple of days. Continue reading
