Trick-Taking Week 2025: Top 10 Greatest Hits

Welcome to Trick-Taking Week 2025, where I’ll be posting trick-taking related content all week. We here at The Opinionated Gamers love trick-taking games, and as I wrote two years ago, many of the writers in this group have contributed to the growth in the mechanic’s popularity in recent years.

The showpiece this year is a set of four different top 10 lists, which I assembled by gathering votes OG writers and various trick-taking designers, publishers, convention hosts, and content creators.

Today’s list is the “great hits” of the trick-taking genre. If somebody was interested in trick-taking, I’d enthusiastically recommend they check out these games. The three other lists coming this week included “hidden gems,” “most beautiful,” and “most innovative.”

Dale Yu: Review of Fixer

Fixer

  • Designer: Takaaki Iida
  • Publisher: Jelly Jelly
  • Players: 2-4
  • Age: 10+
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Amazon affiliate link:
  • Played with review copy provided by publisher

In this competitive trick taker, players utilize the four suits to become the ultimate shadow ruler.  The regime controls the capital, the capital controls the media, the media controls the people, the people overthrow the regime…  Each suit features one weak and one strong match-up. Players take turns placing cards into areas. Players must follow suit in an arena if able. As soon as an area has two cards, conflict resolution occurs!  The winner gets one of the three victory point tokens and takes their opponent’s card as points. However, the losing player can choose to take the stronger card into their hand! Once no victory point tokens remain, the game is over! Do you have what it takes to overcome all the odds and become the FIXER?

Final Amazon Spring Sale Post – mostly Star Wars!

From time to time, I do try to make some posts highlighting some great deals on boardgames. All the links contained here are affiliate links, so to be transparent, the OG could earn some money if you buy the games from these links.   As the Spring Sale is almost over, this will be our last post for it.   If you’re not interested, just pass on this post.  All the links will be below the jump.

That being said, there are a lot of games on sale right now – and maybe you will find a great deal on a new addition to your game collection!  There are a LOT of Star Wars games on sale today, so I’ll highlight a few that I have found.  (You can see the list of the ten games from the 26th by clicking here  and the second list from the 27th here).

Heroscape: Heavily Armed Woodland Creatures and the Stuff of Nightmares

Actually, there’s more nightmare fuel than adorable animal warriors in the trio of April 2025 figure releases for Heroscape – but all three sets bring something interesting to the table. (OK, to the table covered in that cool interlocking Heroscape terrain.) This is actually the second part of the Rising Tide wave – if you’re interested in the first part, you can check out my review from earlier this year.

A quick reminder for those of you playing along at home: Heroscape is a miniatures skirmish combat game played on a board constructed out of (incredibly cool) plastic terrain pieces. (Seriously: folks who play with other minis systems have used this 3D terrain because it works so well.) Since the theme is a battle for dominance in world where the Valkyrie Generals can recruit warriors from multiple times & dimensions, there is a wild mixture of heroes & squads – aliens & Matrix guys & Braveheart & dragons & robots & kung fu monks & gorillas with guns, to name a few. More recently, the good folks at Renegade have added polar bears & space pirates, to name a few more. And it’s one of my favorite games

With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the three new figure sets… and a quick glance at some promo figures.
