Essen Preview #10 – Games from Italian company #2

Here the list in alphabetical order of the other Italian companies offered my some delights on their Essen releases. You can read the first part of this list here. Of course, I’m sure, there will be some misses but some publishers are not so happy to share their secrets or are not sure gamers are so thirsty of news about the Essen release to be able to orient in the huge amount of Essen novelties.

After posting my article I got a news about another Cranio Creation Essen release I’ll include in this second part.

We can start!

Cranio Creations

Like – The Social Games
Designer:Marco Almini, Michele Pierangeli
Players: 3-8
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 10+
Party Game: i have the rules

It looks like a game in the usual Cranio mood that made the Italian company well known all around the world. A party-game about social network with a Munchin-like feeling. It is a card game with tokens (fan) used as coins for a head or tails mechanic. Of course thy also provide me the rules so I’ll be back soon with more details

Ghenos Games
Ghenos Games is a well know company famous for his sport game. Raised from the tracks of Bolide and getting affirmed with Leader 1 is one of the mid-size company in Italy hitting the market both with new release and Italian editions of great game, like the Race for the Galaxy series. This year in Essen they are going to present three games

Swordfish

I have the rules and more infos

Is a great game about swordfish fishing. I have got the almost final version of the rules and it really looks great. It is a gamer games with many nice idea: of course, like most of games, I need to play it to understand the real value. I wrote about it on BGG News: News from Italy and I hope to be able to write more here in the next days.

Lupin the Third: The first Expansion
Designer: Pierluigi Frumusa
Players: 2-5
Time: 60 minutes

No more infos

This first expansion of the last year Lupin the 3rd. I’m not yet been able to get detailed infos about it but I hope it will gone in the direction of fixing some of the problems gamers noticed with the basic games.

Wild Oltrenatura
Players: 2-4
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 8+

New for Essen but already released in Italy. I have wrote something about it on BGG News: News from Italy. It looks like a simple family games with some nice ideas and a interesting mechanic for the movement. I have not played the game so I’m not able to tell more. The publisher, in the press release kit, says:

WILD OLTRENATURA is a board game leading adults and children into the most uncontaminated habitats
of the earth: Kenya’s SAVANNAH, Namibia’s DESERT, Colombia’s JUNGLE and Alaska’s GLACIERS and FORESTS.
An airplane parachutes explorer Fiammetta Cicogna into regions waiting to be explored. Here, she will have to walk or swim, seeking out the best routes, in order to meet the WILDEST ANIMALS and survive.
Players will have to face, and collect, scary sharks, huge cats, aggressive pachyderms, the most poisonous snakes, and many more animals they’ve probably never even heard of! However, they must be careful of Fiammetta’s energy, water and health supplies!
Learn about nature with WILD, a truly adventurous board game. Only the most expert and fearless explorer will be declared the Wild-winner!
So eyes peeled, nerves of steel, and go!

Giochix.it
Giochix.it is another company started as a self-publishing publishers for Michele Quondam projects (Medievalia was the first one) but raised to the format and standard of a real publishing company in the years. This year it is going to present 3 new release

Gladiators
Designer: Michele Quondam
Players: 1-4
Time: 90 minutes
Age: 12+
I have the rules and the materials

It looks like a nice card driven board game with miniatures, a genre is really getting a lot of interest and success in the last years. I have all the access to the rules and files so I’m going to write something more detailed in the next days.

Doge Ship
Designer: Marco Canetta, Stefania Niccolini
Players: 2-5
Time: 75 minutes

Actually I have no fresh infos and news about this game but I’m going to ask Michele, if possibile, something more.

CO2
Designer: Vital Lacerda
Players: 1-5
Time: 120 minutes
Age: 12+

It is a much aviatined game also released by Stronghold Games. Probably someone else here on Opinionatedgamers is going to have more details otherwise I’m going to ask Michele more informations.

Lo Scarabeo
Lo Scarabeo is the greatest tarot company in Italy but, luckily, hired two talented Italian designers: Andrea Chiarvesio and Pierluca Zizzi. With a such boardgames interetsed crew it is not a surprise they are also moving some steps in the boardgames market. Last year they got published Arcanum, a really nice game and this year they will be again at the Spiele. Of course, since the quality and experience of Lo Scarabeo in producing cards, all his release are cards based.

Fairy Land
Designer: Luca Iennaco
Players: 2-4
Time: 45 minutes
Age: 12+

Is a game of Luca Iennaco, Andrea Chiarvesio co-designer of both Kingsburg and Olympus. I got some days ago the access to preview files so, for sure, I’m going to write detailed infos in the next days. I’m sure, since Luca is one of the best Italian playtester ever, the game will be deeply tested and balanced. It is a nice card games about fairy and animals with simple but intriguing rules.

Mind the Move
I’m not sure if we can count Mind the Move as Italian company since now Emanuele is living in French. Of course it has an Italian background and hisotry so, at least for this year, I’m going to include it here. Unluckily after Emanuele crossed the Alps the flow of news and infos about his releases he is going to offers me is almost stopped so I hunger for informations like all of you. I’m not anymore involved in the play-testing of his games like some years ago.

Le Lorie
Designer: Emanuele Ornella
Players: 1-4
Time: 45 minutes
Age: 10+

Placentia Games
Placentia Games surprised the gamers community with Florenza, a self-published games with standards (both rules and materials) comparable with the ones of a real company. This year they are making Essen again with a new release.

Ark & Noah
Designer: Stefano Groppi
Players: 2-4
Time: 45 minutes
Age: 8+
Played an early proto-type

It is a game about Ark & Noah. I have tested it months ago but before writing something more I would check how much the final design will be different from the tested version.

Raven
Is the Italian publisher importing in Italy many interesting games inlcuding Munchkin and others Steve Jackson Games. This year they are also releasing Italian version of Summoner Wars. They are not attending Essen with a booth as far as I know.

Werefolf 2nd ed. + exp
Designer: Cristian Zoli
Players: 8+
Time: 60 minutes
Age: 11+

I got a preview copy of this game and his two expansions and I’m going to write something of this implementation of the werefolf game. Going through the rules and the illustration you are sure it is something designed with adults gamers in the mind.

RedGlove
RedGlove is one of the great Italian publisher with many imported titles and also so new release. Red Glove is publishing both gamers games (it is also the distributors of Ares games in Italy) and kids games, importing Bioviva and other publishers kids-oriented. Last year it was at Essen with Ristorante Italia, a really nice family game got less success than deserved. This year they are presenting two games

Lumacorsa
Designer: Andrea Nani
Players: 2-8
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 8+

I have the game and played several time. I’m going to write about it in the next previews. It is a nice and funny card game, with part of the mechanic inherited by classic cards games and some new hints

Out of Gears
Designer: Andrea Nani
Players: 2-8
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 8+

From the same designer of Lumacorsa. Federico (RedGlove CEO) told me they are going to reveal news about the game only through the game official web site. I’m only been able to know that there will be some real-time mechinc. So, stay tuned on official web site!

What’s Your Games
A real interesting Italian company with a great history of great release. They are not used to make announcements or big previews (actually they also haven’t an official web site working) so I’m actually almost unaware of their planned Essen releases. I’m trying to gran something more, if possible.

Madeira: Pearl of the Atlantic
Designer: Nuno Sentieiro, Paulo Soledade
Players: 2-4
Time: 90 minutes
Age: 12+

Oddville
Designer: Carlo Lavezzi
Players: 2-4
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 12+

Yemaia
It is a real new Italian company debuting in Essen this year. It is a company with a good gamers background (so unluckily no peoples reinventing the monopoly) aimed to make gamers games … we will see!

Al Rashid
Designer: Giorgio De Michele, Pierluca Zizzi
Players: 2-5
Time: 100 minutes
Age: 13+

3 days ago the told be the game is in the printer hands and I’m waiting my preview copy to write something more detailed. I don’t know one of the two designers. Pierluca has a much greater experience in game design: Caligula and Arcanum are both nice game and I’m been so luckily to test Hyperborea, a game designed with Andrea Chiarvesio and scheduled for 2013, that is really a great game!

In my next Essen preview I’m going in details with some of theese games.

Good play

  1. Wolf Wittenstein says:

    Ciao, Liga,
    thanks for your efforts.
In your list I am missing uplay.it edizioni. Have I missed something in #1 or #2 or are these gentlemen simply not publishing anything new in Essen?
    Wolf

    • Hi Wolf. As told in the beginning I’m not aware of everything happening in Italy and I got no communication from Uplay.it. I’m not sure they will have a booth in Essen. I know they have worked on Suburbia and Snowdonia but, I think, for the Italian edition.

As far as I know, until now, Uplay.it is working on Italian edition of games released by other publishers.

I try to got some more news, anyway

  4. Ciao, concerning Al’Rashid, I am the other designers that you don’t know. :)
I have not published other games, since I’m not so much active as other designers because I dedicate most of my free and work time at designing the GRAPHICS and ILLUSTRATIONS for BOARDGAMES! :)
Although this year I will have Al’Rashid published, and perhaps the next year “Space Commander” (found on bgg), and sooner or later, maybe even my rpg-storytelling game “The Lords of Fate.”
However, as I told, my main job in the field of games is the graphics and illustrations: I have already published five games with Ghenos Games and some self-publishers (eg Massimo Pesce and Nicola Castellini), and I have 4 other games being published in Autumn from Ghenos games, Giochi Uniti, and Gotha Games.

Unfortunately,I have not done the graphics of “Al’Rashid”, my first published game as a game designer, I did just the accompaniment to the press, but the illustrations and graphics in general are of a different author for editorial choices.

If you wanna see some of my work for boardgames, go here and search in the “Games and Commisions” subfolders:
    http://erebus74.deviantart.com/gallery/

Hope you will enjoy it and also Al’Rashid.
