Pair 4 out of 5 picture cards and write down the reasoning as well as the Odd One Out. Match other players’ choices and logic to win points. The Odd Seat player that round can earn even more points with each match! Multiple picture cards with thousands of combinations means every game feels fresh! 

During this review, I’ll post two example rounds of cards and you can play the game with me.

To start, give each player a word board and a marker.  Someone gets the Odd Seat card.  Now shuffle the 167 word cards and flip 5 cards face up on the table.  Now all players examine the five pictures and tries to make two related pairs and then an odd word out.  Write these words on your board (as well as the reason for pairing them together).

Now, starting with the Odd Seat player, each player reads their answers aloud.  The Odd Seat player scores one point for each time that another player matches a full line (the two words and the reason).  The Odd Seat player also scores one point for each player that matches his Odd One Out word.

The other players now share their answers, but these players only score one point per row so long as at least one other player has matched their row.  All players mark their score on the right of their board.

Now, pass the Odd Seat card clockwise, put out 5 new cards, and repeat the process.  Continue until everyone has had a turn to be the Odd Seat player.  The player with the most points wins.

My thoughts on the game

Odd Logic is a clever word association game that definitely has its moments.  There always seems to be one or two surprising connections in the game which turns into hilarity.  The rules are dead simple here, it takes about 15 seconds to do a practice round to show people how to pair the words and then maybe about 30 seconds to go over the scoring.

Sometimes the words are such that everyone writes down the same things. Those are the least interesting rounds.  Those are also the ones that end up deciding the game as the player who is the Odd Seat card holder will surely win.  But, this is one of those games that is less about winning and losing and more about telling stories and laughing at the ridiculous rationales that people will give for making certain pairs of words.

Given its simplicity, this is going to be one of the games I keep on hand for holiday get togethers and picnics.  It’s definitely a game for situations like that.
